I think one of the the best things about being a teacher is that every year is a new beginning; new students, new goals, new supplies. It's a fresh start for everything.
One of the best ways to connect with your students as you establish routines and procedures is through read aloud books. These are three I used every year:
When Lightning Comes in a Jar- This book is all about a summer family reunion and is the perfect way to lead into sharing summer adventures.
This activity includes book discussions, a graphic organizer and a craftivity.

The Great Triple Creek Dam Affair- This book is perfect to read aloud when you're discussing your library procedures and book care. It's about the consequences felt by a town when they love their tvs more than than books.
The free download activity has discussion questions and a mini-book about books.

Because of Winn Dixie- This is my all time favorite read aloud. It's a wonderful story about making friends and accepting everyone, even though they are not just like us.
This free sample download has discussion questions for 8 chapters as well as the life lesson cards for those chapters. You also get the activity for Our Tree of Goals.
